Desperate Tories accused of shameless and cynical stunt

“Lorna Slater has been a fine Minister, she has massively increased funding for nature, she has put a ban on new waste incinerators and she’s bringing in Scotland’s first new national park in a generation." - Mark Ruskell

The Tories have been accused of having a “brass neck” lodging a vote of no confidence against circularity minister Lorna Slater on the same day as Scottish Secretary Alister Jack chickened out of voting against shamed former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Jack failed to vote against the lockdown liar, while even serial flip flopper Douglas Ross did so days after being cornered by Scotland’s media last week to be challenged over his previous backing of his disgraced ex leader.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak – who did not show up for the dramatic Commons vote last night – is also being accused of being “weak” after failing to stand up to his old boss.

Now the Tories in Scotland are shamefully trying to deflect attention from their blue on blue parliamentary crisis by lodging a motion against the Scottish Green Minister, after they scuttled her work in making ready Scotland’s deposit return scheme.

Scottish Greens environment spokesperson Mark Ruskell MSP said: “This is a shameless and cynical stunt by the Tories who are getting increasingly desperate every single day as their party and their leadership falls apart.

“The reality here is that Lorna Slater has done an incredible job to bring in Scotland’s first deposit return scheme. It was ready to go. But the Tories stepped in at the last minute and they scuppered the scheme.

“Now they have the absolute audacity, the brass neck, to actually try to blame Lorna Slater for their decision. This is completely absurd.

“Lorna Slater has been a fine Minister, she has massively increased funding for nature, she has put a ban on new waste incinerators and she’s bringing in Scotland’s first new national park in a generation.

“We should all get behind her and I’m sure she will survive this ridiculous stunt from the Tories and she will go on to achieve great things in government.”

Tory links to the drinks industry have been exposed in recent weeks including a £20,000 donation from the Wine and Spirit Trade Association to the party just weeks after they dropped their commitment to glass.

Maurice Golden – one of those behind the vote against Ms Slater – was revealed to have accepted hospitality on multiple occasions to some of Scotland’s most sought after sold out sporting events around the same time.

It was also discovered that millionaire Tory peer Malcolm Offord owns shares in whisky companies, at the same time as a Minister leading UK efforts to help exports for the drinks industry, while also opposing DRS in Scotland.
