Green heating can protect Scotland from fossil fuel hikes

The Scottish Greens will help households to cut spiralling energy bills by overseeing a major expansion of clean, green heating for Scotland’s homes and buildings.
As part of its manifesto the party will commit to bringing back the Heat in Buildings plan to set a clear route map for decarbonising Scotland’s homes and buildings by 2045, which was shelved by the SNP.
This will be combined with the expansion of existing support schemes to help households to replace fossil fuel boilers and make the switch to green energy.
The party’s co-leader, Gillian Mackay, said:
“Households across Scotland are being squeezed like never before, and, without urgent action, it will only get worse as fossil fuel prices surge in the wake of Donald Trump’s reckless war in Iran.
"Both our governments need to act now to shield households from rising costs and profiteering, and the best way we can do that is to reduce our dependency on oil and gas.
“As long as we rely on fossil fuels, we remain exposed to global price shocks we can’t control.
“Every time a major global crisis erupts, it exposes the same failure - governments have left ordinary people vulnerable by refusing to break our dependence on oil and gas.
“We saw that in the aftermath of Putin's invasion of Ukraine and we’re seeing the same thing now with Trump’s bombardment of Iran. It is hitting working people in the pockets while fossil fuel giants cash in.
“Keeping people locked into gas is wrecking our planet and punishes households, while fossil fuel giants rake in massive profits.
"By rapidly expanding clean energy and transforming how we heat our homes we can bring down bills and put money back in people’s pockets.
“A vote for the Scottish Greens on 7th May is a vote to cut bills, tackle fuel poverty and finally end our dependence on volatile fossil fuels.”
