Starmer more interested in clinging to power than delivering real change

Scotland and our planet have yet again been let down by a pitiful King's Speech, which shows Starmer’s real priority is protecting his job, not delivering urgent change to cut household bills, redistribute wealth and tackle the climate emergency.
The Scottish Greens have called for urgent action to cut household bills and tackle the climate emergency, but have welcomed progress on a bill to end conversion practices and a tax on excess profits from energy companies.
Greens have also called for powers to be devolved to Holyrood that will allow MSPs to call an independence referendum.
Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer MSP said:
“This disappointing programme of policies is hardly surprising from a Labour Prime Minister who will be out of a job in a matter of days. Keir Starmer is more interested in clinging to power than delivering the real change that families and communities need.
“He has doubled down on cruel, Tory-style immigration plans, climate-wrecking airport expansion plans, and done almost nothing to cut extortionate household energy bills.
“The public has shown at the ballot box that they have no faith in the Prime Minister, and now he’s losing the support of his own MPs. He must see that the writing is on the wall and resign.
“No Labour MP will deliver the real change this country needs. Labour tried to cut the winter fuel payment, attacked disabled people and armed and enabled Israel’s genocide in Gaza. It is clear that Labour is no longer a party of the working class.
“The Scottish Greens asked voters here to demand better. That is exactly what they did last week, delivering the largest ever group of Green MSPs to Holyrood. We will now get to work tackling the cost-of-living and climate crises, and we’ll ensure the richest in society pay their fair share.”
Ross added:
“The King's Speech shows just how outdated and out of touch Westminster is. A billionaire monarch sat on his golden crown, worth more than most will earn in a lifetime, to deliver a speech about poverty and the struggle of workers.
“If we are to truly deliver the kind of change that will benefit the people of Scotland, we need to get rid of a rigged system that protects the interests of big business and billionaires. The only realistic path to achieve that is by putting Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands with independence.”
