Labour stitch-up leadership contest

Commenting on Labour MPs and MSPs blocking Monica Lennon from appearing on the party’s leadership ballot, Scottish Green co-leader Gillian Mackay said:
“It is deeply regrettable that we are in 2026 and I am still the only woman leading a political party in Scotland.
“Labour’s decision to block Monica Lennon from even getting on the ballot sends a deeply disappointing message about who gets a voice in their party.
“The lack of support from Labour MPs and MSPs makes clear that anyone who opposes new oil and gas drilling, stands up for Scotland’s right to decide our own future, or dares to challenge the party establishment is not welcome in Labour.
“It's no wonder that they have just achieved their worst election result to date at a time when more people than ever before are looking to the Scottish Greens and our progressive vision for a fairer, greener Scotland.
Gillian added:
“There are lots of things I disagree with Monica Lennon on. That is politics. But I would never seek to stop her presenting her case.
“What is it that the Labour leadership are so afraid of? Democracy depends on people being able to share their vision, debate their ideas and win support from members.
“To block her from even having that opportunity ignores the many trade unions and Labour members who have backed her.
“If Labour wants to be taken seriously when it talks about empowering its members and representing working people, it should start by listening to them.
“Political parties should be confident enough to let their members decide. Instead, Labour’s MPs and MSPs have shut down the conversation before it has even begun.”
