Scottish Green Co-leader proud to speak at pro-republic protest
It is time for us to be a modern democratic republic, says Scottish Green Co-leader Patrick Harvie, who addressed a republican protest today outside the Scottish Parliament.
The protest, organised by Our Republic, an anti-Monarchy campaign group, took place this afternoon on the day of the Service of Thanksgiving where King Charles was presented with the ‘Honours of Scotland.’
Speaking at the protest Mr Harvie said he was ‘proud’ to be in attendance, before adding:
“We can be a modern, democratic republic where the power of the head of state is elected rather than inherited. We can be a country where power lies with the people rather than with the archaic symbolism of the crown.”
After the protest Mr Harvie added:
“I can’t think of anything I would want to celebrate less than the unearned wealth, power and inequality that is represented by the Monarchy.
“We are in the most severe cost of living crisis for decades, but we are seeing even more luxuries being lavished on some of the wealthiest people in the country.
“I was proud to speak at the Our Republic protest today, and will continue to campaign for an independent and democratic Scotland where power lies with the people and we elect our head of state.”
