Nuclear energy is unsafe, unreliable and leaves a long and toxic legacy, according to the Scottish Greens. This comes as the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has confirmed plans for the Sizewell C nuclear plant.

Commenting, the Scottish Greens environment spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP said:

"Time and again the Tories have proven that they cannot be trusted with our environment, and this budget has been no exception.

“Nuclear power is unsafe, unreliable and leaves a long and toxic legacy. As Hinkley Point shows us, it is very costly and would need to be paid for on top of skyrocketing bills. Sizewell C will be no different.

“We are living through a brutal cost and climate crisis. The last thing we should be doing is throwing tens of billions of pounds at a nuclear industry that is bad for people and the planet.

“Meanwhile they have kept their commitment for even greater oil and gas exploration while their so-called windfall tax has kept all of the climate-wrecking incentives for more drilling that were built in last time.

“We must be investing in the renewable industries of the future. Renewables are far cheaper, cleaner and safer than nuclear. We can also get them scaled up far quicker than any other energy source.

"The Scottish Greens in government in Scotland, we are doubling onshore wind capacity and driving new opportunities for solar energy and marine renewables. These are the changes that will make a vital difference.

“With the powers of a normal independent country we could do so much more to build a different and better future. It would allow us to invest in our communities and ensure lasting and sustainable jobs and industries that have a future."

We cannot continue pouring vast sums of money into propping up a broken energy market and companies that are profiting from the cost crisis, according to the Scottish Greens.

This comes as Ofgem has announced that the energy price cap is set to rise to an annual level of £4,279. This will double the amount that the UK Government is paying to energy companies.

The Scottish Greens energy spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP, said:

UK must halt Rosebank drilling and leave climate-wrecking Energy Charter Treaty

Tue 22 Nov, 2022

The proposed Rosebank oil field would be terrible for the UK’s reputation and devastating for our planet, according to the Scottish Greens.

The issue was raised in a Topical Question by Scottish Green MSP Mark Ruskell, who also called for the UK to follow other European governments in withdrawing from the damaging Energy Charter Treaty. The treaty allows fossil fuel companies to sue governments if they bring in policies or laws that limit the use of coal, oil or gas.

Speaking after the debate, Mark Ruskell MSP said:

Time to end climate wrecking loophole in UK windfall tax

Mon 21 Nov, 2022

It is time for the UK government to end the incentives for new drilling that have been built-in to its so-called windfall tax, according to the Scottish Greens. This follows the COP 27 summit's failure to agree to "phase out" or "phase down" fossil fuels.
