Time to end age discrimination in wages

Greens call for living wage for workers of all ages

As Scotland marks Living Wage Week, the Scottish Greens have called for Labour to end the inequality that sees younger workers being paid less

The party is calling for an end to age-based wage restrictions and a real living wage for all workers.

At present, the minimum wage is £12.21, but for workers aged 18-20 it is £10, and for workers under 18 it is £7.55.

Analysis from the Trades Union Congress in 2024 found that more than 700,000 18–20 year olds across the UK could be missing out on £2,400 a year on average because they are not covered by the main minimum wage.

The Real Living Wage, set by the Living Wage Foundation, is £13.45 per hour.

Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman said:

“Age discrimination in the workplace is sadly far too common, and it is encouraged by the government through grossly unequal minimum wage requirements for young people.

“Why should workers be paid different rates to do the same job? Young people don’t get a discount on their rent or their food bills because of their age. They should not face this inequality in the workplace.

“It is hugely unfair and, at a time when prices are soaring, it has real-life consequences for young people, particularly for those working in hospitality and retail.

“Everyone deserves a real living wage that can allow them to support themselves and to thrive. But the current system has trapped too many people in a spiral of low pay and insecurity.

“It's time to end this injustice and ensure that everybody has a wage they can live off, regardless of their age.”
