Time to abolish the monarchy as Prince Andrew drops title

This must mark the beginning of an end to the antiquated British monarchy.

Prince Andrew resigning his title should be the beginning of an end to the British monarchy, say the Scottish Greens.

The King’s brother announced he is voluntarily giving up using his title as the Duke of York, after speaking with Charles, amid increasing pressure to resign over his links to Jeffrey Epstein.

The Scottish Greens want the monarchy to be abolished, and stand for an independent Scottish republic.

Scottish Greens MSP Patrick Harvie said:

“The Royal Family is a long-outdated institution that has allowed power and influence to be passed down as an heirloom and concentrated in the hands of the very few.

“While it is right and long overdue that Andrew has now stripped himself of some of his titles, he will still be referred to as a “Prince” despite his public disgrace.

“What kind of system would allow someone so demonstrably inappropriate to have such wealth and power in the first place?

“The UK monarchy is an antiquated relic from yesteryear, and serves no purpose in the 21st century.

“This is a family who are already immensely wealthy, and yet they are bankrolled in excess of millions by the public purse, given tax breaks and some degree of legal immunity that the rest of us are not.

“If we want to become a fairer country then it’s time to finally abolish the monarchy and become an independent Scottish republic.”
