Snare ban victory an important step for Scotland's wildlife

The use of snares is cruel and inhumane.

Banning the use of snares is a huge step forward for animal welfare and Scotland's iconic nature, says Scottish Green MSP Ariane Burgess.

The Scottish Greens secured the ban, which comes into effect today, via an amendment to the Wildlife Management and Muirburn Bill, introduced by Ms Burgess.

Ariane Burgess said:

“This is a huge step in the right direction for protecting Scottish wildlife. There is no excuse for snaring, which is an inhumane practice.

“It is a victory that animal rights campaigners should be proud of. Without their pressure calling for all snares to be outlawed, our wildlife would still be subject to this cruelty.

“It is one of many positive changes that are now in place to protect our iconic nature and to end cruel and harmful treatment.

“Scotland has brought in the most robust laws on hunting with dogs in the UK, and we will continue to campaign for an end to cruel blood sports across species and wildlife crime that has no place in our modern society.

“Nature in our country is world renowned and we need to do all we can to protect it.

“This ban is just one of many changes that are needed, not only to save animals from distress or death, but also to restore our climate and biodiversity.

“We must build on this momentum and keep pushing for even further improvements for all of Scotland’s creatures, great and small.”
