Scottish Greens hail BBC Scotland football announcement
Scottish Green MSP Gillian Mackay has hailed the news that the BBC will be showing the Scotland men’s teams pre-Euro Championship friendlies with Northern Ireland and Finland.
Ms Mackay, who is the party’s sport spokesperson, has led calls for all Scotland football matches to be shown on free-to-view TV, working alongside Gavin Newlands MP and supporter groups on the campaign.
Ms Mackay said: “This is a really important breakthrough, and I am delighted.
“As the buzz continues to grow ahead of the Euros in Germany this Summer, I want as many people as possible to be able to watch Steve Clarke and his team.
"Credit to everyone who has campaigned for this, and to the BBC for securing the rights.
“Our national team is for all of us, but, especially in this cost of living crisis, far too many people have been priced out of our beautiful game.
“This is a big step in the right direction and is hopefully a sign of more to come.
“Far too many of our matches have been hidden behind an expensive paywall, making them inaccessible for lots of fans.
“It is fans that make football so special. If we want children to look up to our athletes or to be inspired by them then they need to be able to see them in action."
