Scottish Greens call for future Tartan Army fixtures to be broadcast for free

All Scotland games should be on free-to-view TV.

Following the award-winning success of the Scottish Greens co-leader Gillian Mackay MSP’s campaign, the Party has now called for all of Scotland’s men’s team’s football matches to be broadcast free of charge for everyone in Scotland.

Scotland’s World Cup matches will be free to view for anyone living in Scotland, with the Greens calling for broadcasters to ensure this is turned into a permanent fixture once the tournament is over.

The party argues that at a time when football club ticket prices are increasing, the international team and the SFA must set an example and lower the cost of being a football fan, starting with making all of Scotland’s men’s team football fixtures free to view for everyone in Scotland.

Scottish Greens co-leader, Gillian Mackay MSP said:

Millions of us are looking forward to seeing Steve Clarke and the men’s team representing us on the world’s biggest stage.

"Football should be for everyone, not just for those who can afford the subscription fee. If we want children to look up and be inspired by our amazing athletes, then they need to be able to see them in action.

“That’s why we are calling for Scotland’s games to be made free for everyone to watch permanently, not just when we qualify for the World Cup. As we know all too well in Scotland that could be once in a generation.”

“At a time when ticket prices are increasing, families across the country should have the option of watching our national team from home, free of cost.

“Having so many of the unforgettable qualification games on free-to-view TV was really great for families across the country, who were able to enjoy it together and to get behind the team and cheer on their success.

“The SFA and broadcasters should be setting an example that football isn’t something to be priced out of, it’s something we all share and all be able to enjoy.”
