Scottish Greens demand Prestwick not be used by Trumps’ Troops in face of US economic aggression

Patrick Harvie MSP has warned that Scotland cannot continue allowing publicly-owned infrastructure to be used by the US military in face of Trump's Tariffs

Scottish Greens External Affairs spokesperson, Patrick Harvie MSP has warned that Scotland cannot continue allowing publicly-owned infrastructure to be used by the US military while Donald Trump pursues economic policies that risk harming Scottish workers and industries.

It follows the US President’s announcement of a new 15% global tariff on imports after the US Supreme Court ruling deemed his previous tariffs unlawful, which is expected to disproportionately impact countries such as the UK which had previously negotiated lower rates, while Downing Street responds saying ‘nothing is off the table’.

Scottish Greens External Affairs spokesperson, Patrick Harvie MSP said:

“After the US Supreme Court deemed his previous global tariffs unlawful, Donald Trump now appears willing to escalate a trade dispute at everyone else’s expense rather than accept the limits of his own authority.

“While his administration throws their toys out of the pram by pursuing protectionist trade policies that will damage Scottish exporters and put jobs at risk, Scotland continues to allow US military forces to operate from publicly-owned infrastructure at Prestwick Airport.

“Scottish public assets are being used to support the United States’ aggressive global projection of power by a government whose economic agenda threatens working people here at home.

“Trump’s tariffs are part of a wider strategy that uses economic pressure to advance US geopolitical interests, often at the expense of smaller nations.

“Whether it is his tariffs or his troops, Scotland mustn’t just accept the consequences of Trump’s actions, especially while our public infrastructure is used to facilitate his agenda.

“Downing Street has said that nothing is off the table in response to these tariffs, and that must include action to protect Scottish exporters and workers from the economic fallout.

“If the Prime Minister means that, he must urgently set out what protections will be put in place for Scottish exporters and workers if these tariffs are imposed.

“And the Scottish Government should stop putting publicly-owned infrastructure like Prestwick Airport at the disposal of the US military.

“Scotland must reject using its public assets to facilitate Trump’s toxic agenda, pursuing economic policies that risk harming our industries, jobs and supply chains.”
