Scottish Greens announce candidate for Aberdeen South by-election

The Scottish Greens will contest the upcoming Aberdeen South by-election on June 18th with their local candidate Jorg Shelton-Eckstein.
The seat overlaps with the Scottish Parliament constituency of Aberdeen Central, where the Scottish Greens surged to second place on the regional ballot at the election earlier this month.
Jorg was a PhD student at Robert Gordon University and has a background in computer research. He has also dedicated 4 years to volunteering locally with a mental health charity.
He is standing to advocate for progressive change at a time when the establishment parties are putting corporate interests and profits ahead of the needs of Scotland’s communities, especially in the North East, where workers have been abandoned by the oil and gas companies as the industry declines.
On his selection as the Scottish Greens candidate for Aberdeen South, Jorg said:
“I am delighted to be standing in this by-election to give the people of Aberdeen South the opportunity to demand better from Westminster.
“For too long, the needs of our communities here in the North East have been ignored by governments in London and Edinburgh, as well as by the fossil fuel giants that have profited from our city and exploited our workers for decades, while paying very little back to our community.
“It’s time to demand better for Aberdeen. On June 18th, you can do that by voting for the Scottish Greens.”
Scottish Greens co-leader Ross Greer said:
“Jorg is a fantastic candidate for Aberdeen South, he has lived and worked in this community for years and knows just how scunnered people are feeling with governments who have abandoned the North East of Scotland.
“Every vote for Jorg and the Scottish Greens on June 18th will be a vote to demand better for Aberdeen. We are the only party willing to be honest about the decline of oil and gas, and the urgent need to create thousands of new, high-quality jobs in industries which will last for decades to come. Aberdeen can be the powerhouse of the renewables sector, just as it was for fossil fuels.
“Greens have shown that we can deliver for the North East. We’ve already delivered free bus travel for young people, wiped out school meal debt and ended peak rail fares. With your vote on June 18th, we can cut household energy bills, create well-paid, secure jobs in green energy, and secure Scotland’s future as an independent nation in the European Union.
“Let’s demand better for Aberdeen, vote Scottish Greens.”
