Scotland must put paws before profits and ban greyhound racing

Parliament to vote on landmark bill to ban greyhound racing
Scottish Green MSPs hold boards saying 'I support an end to greyhound racing', with a greyhound standing in front of them.

Scottish Greens MSP Mark Ruskell’s Bill to end greyhound racing in Scotland for good will be voted on at Stage 1 today.

The Greyhound Racing (Offences) (Scotland) Bill will outlaw the racing of greyhounds and prevent the operation of race tracks in Scotland.

This comes as greyhound racing is being banned internationally, with a similar bill currently passing through the Welsh Parliament.

Only 8 countries in the world still allow commercial greyhound racing. Animal welfare organisations have long argued that without a ban, Scotland is vulnerable to the re-establishment of the industry.

Last year, Scottish Government support was confirmed by the Minister for Agriculture and Connectivity, who acknowledged that “there are genuine risks associated with racing greyhounds around tracks of oval design and this is supported by evidence.”

Mark said:

“Time and again, greyhound racing has been linked to injuries, neglect and sometimes even the death of dogs once they are no longer profitable.

“My bill would permanently close the door on greyhound racing in Scotland. It bans the operation of racing tracks and makes it clear that this outdated, cruel industry has no future here. Scotland has stood against animal harm in the past, it’s time we put paws before profits.

“While I am hopeful that the Scottish Government will back my Bill, the parliamentary clock is ticking to pass this crucial legislation before this year’s election in May.

“Unless MSPs want to see more suffering and mistreatment of these gentle dogs, they must vote for my Bill and ensure it passes before Parliament dissolves."

Mark added:

“I have seen first hand with my own late greyhound, Bert, how important it is for dogs to spend their lives in loving homes not on racetracks. Every greyhound deserves a chance at a life outside of racing.

"I am urging my fellow MSPs to do the right thing by these dogs and join my efforts to ban greyhound racing for good.”
