Scotland has very long way to go in tackling ‘obscene’ inequality

The publication of the Scottish Government’s Wealth in Scotland report shows the obscene levels of inequality across our country and the need for radical change, say the Scottish Greens.
The report revealed that the richest 2% have more combined wealth than 50% of the Scottish population. With the richest 10% nearly 200 times better off than the 10% least well off.
The party’s equalities spokesperson, Maggie Chapman said:
“The obscene inequality in these statistics tells the story of two Scotlands. There is a small number of people who are very well off, and a far greater number who have very little.
“It tells the story of financial stagnation for many, with huge disparities in wages, savings and housing. This is not how a successful economy should function. It’s no wonder that so many people are rightly angry with a system that entrenches such poverty.
“Scotland has a very long way to go if we are to build a fairer society, and this must be a clarion call for change.
“We need to ensure that Scotland has full control over workers’ rights and conditions, but the lack of powers is not an excuse for inaction. We must use all of the levers we have to their full effect.
“Without action this will only get worse, with young people and families being hit particularly hard. The system is rigged against young generations - with no affordable homes, no decent pensions, and no cushion.
“Scottish Greens have championed some important steps forward to reduce inequality, such as negotiating an increase in the Scottish Child Payment in 2022 and ending the cruel benefits cap, but when the differences are so high we need urgent and radical systemic action.
“An unequal society is not a happy or healthy one. It’s time to end the wealth hoarding of the super rich and ensure that the vast wealth in Scotland is shared by everyone.”
