Record emergency food parcels show terrible extent of Tory failure

Figures from the Trussell Trust show a record number of people relying on emergency food parcels.

The shocking increase in emergency food parcels exposes the terrible extent of Tory failure, say the Scottish Greens.

This morning the Trussell Trust revealed that the number of parcels being distributed has hit a record high, following an increase of 38% across the UK in the last year.

The Scottish Greens economy and social security spokesperson, Maggie Chapman MSP said:

“This is a damning indictment of the terrible economic failures of this terrible Tory government. Nobody in a country that has so much wealth should be forced to use a foodbank.

“Behind each of these numbers is a household or a family that is suffering and struggling with an economy that has been rigged against them. Whether it is soaring food prices, extortionate bills or escalating interest rates, these failures have plunged hundreds of thousands of people into poverty.

“We can’t go on like this. The Tories know the brutal consequences of their shameful policies, but their solution is even more cuts and the further demonisation and scapegoating of refugees and other vulnerable groups.

“In Scotland we are using the limited powers we have to do things differently, whether it is the groundbreaking child payment or the decision to raise benefits in line with inflation. With the powers of a normal independent country we could do so much more.

“The Scotland I want us to be is one that prioritises human dignity and equality, and where foodbanks and emergency deliveries are no longer necessary.”
