Reacting to the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the Scottish Greens constitutional spokesperson, Patrick Harvie MSP said:

“Everything we already know about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor strengthens the argument for republicanism.

“Some of the allegations that are already in the public domain are truly appalling and his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein was particularly indefensible. It is chilling that this is the man who spent decades so close to the throne, and who could so easily have ended up as Head of State.

“There is no case for hereditary rule in the 21st century. It is a ridiculous, antiquated relic of a system that flies in the face of democracy.

“Despite his many glaring character flaws and scandals, Andrew has led an immensely privileged life. As a result of who his parents were he has enjoyed access to power and wealth beyond most people's wildest dreams.

“It is absolutely essential that the investigation has the authority to access any records held by the Monarchy itself, and to question under caution anyone - including members of the Royal family themselves - who had knowledge of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s appointment as trade envoy, or his actions in that role.

“There is no defence for a system which would allow so much unearned and unaccountable power to lie with one family and with individuals who we have no choice in.

“Whatever happens in the months ahead, the case for Scotland to be a modern independent republic has never been stronger.”
