Labour betraying workers with U-turn on unfair dismissal protections

Workers should always be protected from exploitation.

Labour is betraying workers with its reported U-turn on unfair dismissal protection from their first day in a job.

According to media reports, Ministers now plan to introduce the right after six months, instead of their manifesto commitment of doing so from day one. This was a fundamental feature of Labour’s forthcoming Employment Rights Bill.

Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman said:

“This is a disgraceful U-turn by a so-called Labour government, and a betrayal of workers.

"Exploitation and unfair dismissal is never acceptable, so why should workers not have protections against these unjustifiable policies from day one?

“Big business and rogue employers have had far too much power for far too long. We urgently need to address the imbalance. Watering down pledges and promises won’t achieve this.

“Every worker deserves safety, dignity and security regardless of how long they have been in a job. These aren’t luxuries but the foundation of fair work. I’d have expected a Labour Government to deliver them!"
