Greens urge governments to rethink trans human rights rollback

2026 must be the year for governments to rethink their rollback on equality, so that we can offer trans people their basic fundamental human rights and end the culture war waged against them, say the Scottish Greens.
Scottish Greens spokesperson for equality, Maggie Chapman MSP said:
“This is a time of year when a lot of people go home to spend time with their loved ones.
“But for a lot of trans people in particular, this time of year is difficult. Some people become estranged from their family after coming out as trans, and too many others still have to hide who they are to keep the peace over the festive period.
“Nobody should have to hide their authentic selves in private or public. But in a society where transphobia and hatred are becoming normalised and entrenched through exclusionary legislation, a lot of trans people do not feel safe being themselves.
“Less than 1% of the UK population identifies as transgender or non-binary, yet they are continually blamed, demonised, threatened and pushed out of public spaces for simply existing.
“The Supreme Court ruling this year was part of a larger government rollback of human rights for minority groups and it has raised many more questions than answers. It has also increased the fear and anxiety felt by trans and non-binary people, forcing many to exclude themselves from activities and society because they don’t feel safe or cannot access basic facilities like toilets.
“We must not allow progress to be halted or reversed. There must be a rethink to ensure equality is at the forefront of each government's policy making.
“Trans rights are human rights, and each of us deserves access to public spaces and services regardless of how we look or identify. The Scottish Greens will stand in solidarity with our trans and non-binary siblings today, tomorrow and always."
