Greens condemn Palestine Action proscription

Peaceful protest is not a crime.

The Scottish Green Party’s Autumn Conference has voted overwhelmingly to oppose the anti-democratic proscription of Palestine Action and the criminalisation of peaceful protest.

The motion, moved by Maggie Chapman MSP, opposed “gross overreach by the UK state” and reaffirmed the party’s opposition to Israeli apartheid and the genocide that has been inflicted on Gaza.

In proposing the motion, Maggie said:

“When the UK Government voted to proscribe Palestine Action as a so-called “terrorist” group, it did not just criminalise activists: it criminalised conscience.

“It sought to silence those who dare to expose complicity in war crimes, to disrupt the machinery that arms oppression, to stand up for human rights when governments will not.”

Maggie added:

“Palestine is not a crime scene - it is a call to our humanity.

“The people of Gaza, of the West Bank, of every refugee camp and occupied village, deserve solidarity, not censorship.

“Let us reaffirm – proudly, defiantly – that anti-apartheid activism is not terrorism. It is moral clarity. It is courage in the face of complicity.

“We demand the UK Government reverse this disgraceful proscription. We demand an end to military aid to Israel. And we demand justice, freedom, and dignity for Palestine, now and always.”
