Scottish Greens Co-leader Gillian Mackay MSP has hailed Hannah Spencer MP’s victory in the Gorton and Denton by-election, after voters elected the Green Party candidate in what had long been considered a safe Labour seat.

Scottish Greens Co-leader Gillian Mackay MSP said:

“This is a historic result that shows people are ready for something different from the politics they have had to endure for decades.

“Hannah’s victory sends a clear message that communities want real action on the cost of living, on public services and on the climate crisis, not more of the same managed decline from the same-old parties in the corridors of Westminster.

“This was a seat that Labour once considered untouchable, but voters have chosen a local Green candidate who has spent her working life fixing homes and supporting her community.

Gillian added: “Hannah has just shown Scotland that the best way to keep Reform out is by voting Green.

“As Reform tries to exploit frustration and sew division, Labour are retreating from the bold action that people need. This result shows there is a growing appetite for hopeful, progressive politics that puts people and the planet first.

“As we approach the Holyrood election in May, people across Scotland will be looking for representatives who will stand up for fairness, tackle inequality and deliver the climate action that our communities deserve.

“The Scottish Greens are ready to offer that alternative on May 7th.”
