Gatwick expansion an environmental disaster

Time to invest in public transport not climate-wrecking airports.

Scottish Greens transport spokesperson, Mark Ruskell, has urged Labour Ministers to rethink giving the greenlight to a Gatwick expansion that could increase flight numbers by 100,000.

Mark said:

“This is totally reckless. It is an environmental disaster in the making and leaves Labour’s climate credentials in tatters.

“We have just had the world’s hottest year on record and a summer of wildfires and climate chaos. Giving the greenlight for another runway is the last thing we should be doing and I urge the UK government to rethink its decision.

“We urgently need to reduce the number of flights taking off and landing across the UK.

"Choosing to increase emissions at this crucial time for our planet's future is nothing but climate vandalism, and will only mean more air pollution and noise for the communities who live nearby.

“We badly need to invest in affordable and efficient public transport to connect our towns and cities and open up our country. This would be far better for people and planet than yet another needless and destructive airport expansion.”
