Dundee University cuts are devastating blow for staff and students

The announcement that Dundee University will be shedding 632 jobs - around a fifth of its workforce - is a devastating blow to staff and students who have dedicated their working lives to the institution, says Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman.
Ms Chapman said:
“These proposed cuts are brutal, so much worse than expected.
“It is devastating news for staff and students, who have seen the institution they love being dragged into a financial crisis by a senior management team that is not fit for purpose.
“For them to propose cutting a fifth of staff is a shocking betrayal of their workers and the students whose services will suffer.”
Ms Chapman has been nominated by over 50 students to stand as rector for the institution.
Ms Chapman added:
“I will be a campaigning rector who is a strong voice for students and will stand against these dreadful cuts.
“Students and staff have not been meaningfully involved in the conversation, entirely destroying trust in senior management.
“How on earth can they justify putting hundreds of people’s livelihoods at risk while offering a breath-taking £200k for a new so-called ‘Transformation Director’?
“Workers and students make Dundee University the great institution it is. They deserve dignity, security, and real solutions, not this managed decline.”
