BBC cuts will have devastating impact on UK broadcasting

BBC workers deserve our solidarity.

Scottish Greens culture spokesperson Q Manivannan has raised concerns about cuts being announced today by the BBC.

Their comments come as The BBC has announced 550 job cuts in news, TV and radio as part of a plan to save £500m across the corporation over the next two years.

Q said:

“These cuts will have a devastating impact on UK broadcasting. My solidarity is with the BBC workers and their families who will be under immense stress and anxiety. They deserve to be well cared for.

“The BBC can and must represent the best and bravest broadcasting in the country, but that can’t happen when we are seeing such vast cuts to the workforce that sustains it.

“In a media landscape dominated by commercial broadcasters and vanity platforms owned and monopolised by the super rich, it is important that we have non-partisan and quality public broadcasting that seeks to inform, educate and entertain.

“Too many journalists, presenters, and producers are already being forced to do more with less, and today’s announcement will only make that worse.

“Worldwide misinformation by social media algorithms will only get worse, and we need high quality news broadcasting as a counterweight to it.

“With recent cuts at STV and in news rooms across the country, it is a really difficult time for an industry that is more vital than ever.”
