Linlithgow Loch is one of West Lothian’s most important natural and historic places. It should be a thriving loch, rich in wildlife and a safe, welcoming space for people to enjoy. Instead, it is increasingly polluted, regularly blighted by toxic algae blooms and suffering from poor water quality.
The loch’s decline has been known about for years. There have been studies, discussions and acknowledgements that something needs to change, but meaningful action has not followed. Meanwhile the loch continues to deteriorate.
This cannot be allowed to continue.
We are calling for a proper Loch Restoration Project for Linlithgow Loch, with the leadership, expertise and resources needed to deliver real change. In particular, we are asking Historic Environment Scotland (HES) to engage with loch restoration experts and bring in a dedicated Project Officer, supported by the right scientific and environmental expertise, to lead a coordinated restoration programme.
Restoring Linlithgow Loch means more than monitoring its decline. It means tackling pollution at source, addressing the legacy of nutrient build-up and sediment, and putting in place long-term solutions that protect the loch for future generations.
We are calling for:
• A funded, expert-led restoration project for Linlithgow Loch
• A dedicated project officer to coordinate action and delivery
• Clear plans to improve water quality and tackle algal blooms
• Long-term commitment from public bodies, not short-term fixes
• Transparency and meaningful community involvement
Linlithgow Loch belongs to everyone. With the right leadership and investment, it can be restored as a healthy, living loch at the heart of the town.
By signing this action, you are adding your voice to a growing call for a loch restoration project and asking decision-makers to stop delaying and start delivering.
