Joint SYG-FYEG Statement on an Independence Referendum

Scottish Young Greens and the Federation of Young European Greens joint statement on a second Independence Referendum

Following First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement preparing for a second Scottish independence referendum, the Scottish Young Greens and the Federation of Young European Greens welcome the move to give Scotland a choice on their future. Giving the Scottish people the opportunity to express what direction they want their country to head in is vital, given the rest of the UK & Scotland have never been further apart.

This is why we believe Scotland can make a better future for all by putting our own future in our own hands. The UK Government has been determined to pursue a farcical Hard Brexit Great British fantasy of yesteryear, at the cost of social, environmental & employment rights.

This thoughtless arrogance is a threat to young people & the future many have fought to make better. We must not only make young people the heart of this campaign for independence, but also at heart of our decision making to make a sustainable, forward thinking country.

It is little wonder this choice has to be made, due to the Tories’ apathy to working in partnership with the UK’s member countries. This, as well as the lack of consideration for the long-term impact of their power grab, is destined to mean they “take back control” for the UK elites & not to the people.

The Scottish Young Greens and the Federation of Young European Greens believe Scotland as an outward-looking, independent country as part of Europe can create the truly progressive, inclusive country Scotland reflects in its values, the utter opposite of the regressive rhetoric of the UK Government in igniting “Empire 2.0”.
