The Scottish Greens are calling for the Prime Minister to finally do the right thing and sack Nadhim Zahawi.

The ongoing tax scandal, combined with allegations surrounding Boris Johnson, shows that the Tory Party is up to its knees in sleaze and that Rishi Sunak has failed to reform it.

The Scottish Greens economy spokesperson, Maggie Chapman MSP, said:

“What message would it send if Nadhim Zahawi is allowed to stay on as Tory Chair?

“We know that he has had to pay a big penalty to HMRC over his taxes. Putting it to a review is not good enough and many will see it as a cynical attempt to kick it into the long grass.

“Every time we think the Tory Party has hit rock bottom they manage to sink to a new low.

"Zahawi must be sacked, but we must also see an end to the culture in Westminster that has allowed this kind of sleaze to run rampant for so long.

“There is surely no way that any government with a shred of credibility would allow him to continue in this role or any other. Every day that he is allowed to stay as Chair tells us as much about the Party as it does about him.

“Rishi Sunak promised that his government would move on from the scandals of the Johnson era, but he’s only three months in and he’s already knee-deep in sleaze.

“He cannot reform his party because the sleaze, corruption and cronyism we have seen from Zahawi, Boris Johnson and so many others is central to the DNA of their party.”

IMF forecast proves Tories are no longer fit to lead

Tue 31 Jan, 2023

The latest IMF forecast showing that the UK will be the only G7 country to see its economy shrink proves the Tory government is incapable of running the economy, warn the Scottish Greens.

A national strike, cost of living crisis and multiple resignations over allegations of corruption, incompetence and scandal provides further evidence of their inability to lead.
