We have a duty to lead the way - Harvie on IPCC report

The impacts of climate change are likely to be severe and irreversible, according to a major report by the UN.

The IPCC report says our health, homes, food and safety are all likely to be threatened by rising temperatures.

Responding, Green MSP Patrick Harvie said:

“From the IPCC to the independent Committee on Climate Change, there is no shortage of expert voices growing louder in their calls for governments to take radical measures. We must cut the pollution that threatens quality of life for so many at home and around the world.

“The Scottish and UK Governments both appear to be in denial on this issue. The Coalition is rolling out the red carpet for frackers and gas guzzlers, while SNP ministers are unwilling to see the connection between their love of fossil fuels and their failure to meet climate targets year after year.

“Our economy is inextricably linked to the global environment, and if we continue to pay lip service to emissions reduction we risk massive disruption to our food supplies and our international trade. We are in an enviable position in Scotland with our renewable resources and we have a duty to lead the way to a sustainable society.

“What we don’t have is strong leadership from our governments who are effectively dumping on the next generation. Those who genuinely understand the benefits of cutting emissions must keep up the pressure.”
