UK Labour must double down on renewables to cut household bills

Scottish Greens urge UK Government to act on Climate Change Committee report and double down on renewables

The UK Government must move further and faster with renewable energy investment to reduce household bills, say the Scottish Greens.

The latest report from the Climate Change Committee (CCC) shows that a push towards electrification is not happening quick enough. Coupled with the conflict in Iran pushing oil and gas prices through the roof, households across Scotland and the wider UK are bearing the financial brunt of Government inaction.

CCC states that households could save at least £1200 per year by moving away from gas boilers and petrol cars and using heat pumps and EVs to reduce bills and use clean energy sources to heat and power their homes.

Scottish Greens spokesperson for Energy, Kristopher Leask MSP, is calling on the UK Labour Government to take action that will allow more households across the country to benefit from cheaper, greener energy and end the reliance on gas.

Kristopher said:

“Too many households rely on gas for heat and energy, and it doesn’t have to be this way when we have so many quality, clean, green, renewable options at our disposal that would protect our planet while providing cheap electricity to power homes.

“The CCC report shows that household bills are on the rise because the UK isn’t moving fast enough towards renewable electrification.

“We need to ensure that green options are affordable and widely available if we are to seize the opportunity to build our green industries while cutting bills.

“The impact of the invasion of Iran shows how vulnerable we are to global price hikes. It has pushed oil and gas prices to the extremes, having a massive knock-on effect on people and their families who are left to pay the bill.

“Emissions have fallen slightly but not at the pace we need. Particularly with a growing anti-climate movement, the UK Government must go further and faster.

“By breaking the link between electricity and gas prices, more people will be able to make that switch to renewables like heat pumps and solar panels to power their homes, and actually feel the financial benefit while doing their part to protect our climate.”
