UK Government must act; asylum accommodation is a “disgrace"

Ross Greer MSP, External Affairs spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, today (31 Jan) urged the UK Government to act after a report concluded that the state of asylum accommodation provided by Government contractors is a “disgrace”.

The report by Westminster's Home Affairs Committee says it is “shameful” that very vulnerable people have been placed in vermin-infested, unclean accommodation and that there is inadequate support, for example for pregnant women.

Ross Greer MSP, who has highlighted poor asylum accommodation in Scotland in debates at Holyrood, said:

“This report backs up what asylum seekers in Scotland have been saying about the horrendous treatment inflicted on them. The calls for the UK Government to act cannot continue to be ignored.

“In September last year, the Scottish Parliament voted for my motion to have asylum services devolved so we can end this inhumane treatment here. Scotland is a welcoming country, keen to do more to help refugees and asylum seekers but limited by the UK Government. We cannot allow vulnerable people to be at the receiving end of such horrific treatment.”
