Trump state visit: UK should never welcome fascists
Commenting ahead of Donald Trump’s state visit, Scottish Green Co-Leader Ross Greer said:
“Donald Trump is a convicted criminal and the world’s most infamous sexual abuser. He continues to arm Israel as they commit a genocide against Palestinians, has betrayed our Ukrainian allies by cozying up to Putin and incited his supporters to overturn a democratic election because his opponent won. He is the very definition of a fascist, and the last person we should roll out the red carpet for.
“There is nothing to be gained from appeasing extremists like Trump. You do not defeat hateful bullies by grovelling at them. We should instead confront him over the harm he is doing to people in America and across the world.
“Rolling out the red carpet is a slap in the face to the families being rounded up and disappeared across the US by Trump’s goons, never mind the Palestinians and Ukrainians dying as a result of his decisions.
“The best thing we can do to support businesses currently exporting to the US is a relentless focus on diversifying into less risky markets. There is no way to reliably protect our access to an economy controlled by a man whose position on tariffs is based on whatever is said on Fox News each morning.
“With the Trumpification of our politics and the radical right feeling more empowered than ever, I urge the Prime Minister and his colleagues to think of how the inevitable photos of them grinning alongside Trump will look when the history books are written.”
