Tory oil plans devastating for household bills and climate

The Tories have stopped even pretending to care about our climate, says Scottish Green MSP Patrick Harvie.
Speaking ahead of Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s speech in Aberdeen today which will call for every drop of North Sea oil to be exploited, Patrick has urged a relentless and irreversible focus on clean, green renewable energy.
Patrick said:
“This is straightforward climate vandalism and it is beyond reckless. The Tories are no longer even pretending to care about our environment. But it’s clear they don’t care about people’s bills or jobs either - the only people they’re helping are their own super-rich fossil fuel funders.
“What they are proposing is a recipe for disaster and the only beneficiaries will be the multibillion pound oil and gas companies who have been wrecking our planet for far too long.
“We cannot keep on burning fossil fuels at ever greater cost for our planet and for household bills. It’s not a serious or workable policy and will only keep us tied to unstable fossil fuel prices.
“If the Tories had any interest in creating jobs across the North East of Scotland they would be joining us in calling for a relentless and irreversible focus on clean, green energy.
“What households and businesses need are bills that come down and stay down, and that means breaking our dependence on oil and gas.
“Green energy is the safest, cheapest and cleanest energy available. Scotland is lucky to have resources that any country would envy, and we need to invest in them.
“Jobs in renewables have already surpassed oil and gas jobs both in Scotland and across the globe, but we are not living up to our full potential. That is where our future must lie, anything else will cost jobs and hike up bills.”
