Tory anti-union proposals are attack on every worker

The UK government’s new anti-union proposals are “an attack on every single worker” according to the Scottish Greens, who have called the right to strike a fundamental right.

The Scottish Greens trade union spokesperson, Maggie Chapman MSP, said:

“This is an attack on every worker, the type of which hasn’t been seen since the days of the Thatcher government.

"The right to strike is a fundamental right, hard fought for, and one that should be defended by every democrat.

“The UK already has some of the most restrictive anti-union laws anywhere in Europe, and these proposals will make things even worse. They will be cheered to the rafters by every bad boss and exploitative employer.

“Tories are terrified of trade unions because they know how effective they are. That is why they have pulled out all the stops to curtail their ability to organise.

“Unions have played a central role in ensuring better terms and working conditions for every single one of us. Whether it is higher wages, bank holidays or weekends, these rights have been hard fought and won by organised, unionised workers.

“I would caution Tory members to step back and reject these authoritarian policies being imposed by a Cabinet and Prime Minister so clearly out of control.”

“Workers rights will always be at the heart of our vision for a fairer and greener Scotland. If we are to build a recovery that works for people and the planet then it must be one with workers’ and trade unions at its heart.”
