Time for a fairer, greener and independent Scotland in Europe

Scotland’s route back to Europe can only be independence.

Responding to a landmark poll showing 73% of Scots would rejoin the European Union, the Scottish Greens external affairs spokesperson, Patrick Harvie, has said the only way to do so is with independence.

Patrick said:

“Nearly three quarters of people in Scotland now want to rejoin the European Union. That tells you everything you need to know about how badly Brexit has failed. It is a clear rejection of the damage it has done to our economy, our rights and our place in the world.

“Yet Scotland remains tied to a Westminster system that is drifting towards deregulation, division and the politics of grievance and scapegoating.

“With Nigel Farage positioning himself for power, backed by Donald Trump and his allies, the UK risks becoming a playground for a hard-right wrecking crew who see protections, standards and cooperation as obstacles to be torn down, at the expense of workers and our environment.

“Farage and his series of parties have always served themselves and their wealthy backers, and now we face the very real prospect of him forming the next UK Government.

“Keir Starmer’s Labour party offers no way out of this. By ruling out EU membership, they have accepted Brexit as permanent and left Scotland trapped.

“Our only route back to Europe is with the powers of a normal independent country.

“The Scottish Greens continue to stand for independence, for rejoining the EU, and for building an economy that works for people and planet, ensuring the wealthiest in our society pay what they should.

“The Greens are on the side of workers, communities and future generations. If people want real change, they will not get it from isolationist billionaires playing politics, they will get it by voting Green.”
