The Tories are wrecking our climate with cynical culture war

Our climate can not be sacrificed as part of a cynical Tory culture war.

The Tories are recklessly destroying our climate as part of their disgraceful culture war, warn the Scottish Greens.

It comes with reports that the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, is set to shred the UK’s environmental commitments as part of a cynical campaign to remain in Downing Street.

Scottish Greens · "We're sick to death of this" - Mark Ruskell MSP on Tory Climate Rollback

The party’s environment spokesperson, Mark Ruskell MSP, said:

“This would be an extremely destructive and cynical move that would do real damage and pour more fuel on the global fire.

“The UK is already lagging far behind where it needs to on climate action and the Prime Minister’s reckless proposals would make that far worse.

“The Tories have made clear that they see our environment as just another theatre for their disgraceful culture war. From curbing low emission zones to approving a new coal mine and granting 100 new oil and gas exploration licences, these are not the actions of a man or a Party that could care less about our climate.

“To be proposing this at the same time as world leaders are meeting over our very future shows the level of contempt the Tories have for future generations and will make the Prime Minister a laughing stock.

“This is a time for climate leadership and a fair and just transition away from polluting industries. Homegrown renewable energy is the cheapest, greenest and most secure energy available. But the Tories are doubling down on fossil fuels and it will be our environment and our economy that suffer.

“With Scottish Greens in government here in Scotland we will continue to push for a renewables led just transition, changes in how we better heat our buildings, for cleaner more affordable travel, and record investment in nature. These are all vital changes that would be hugely beneficial even if we weren’t facing a climate catastrophe.

“Make no mistake, if the Prime Minister goes ahead with this it will have a dramatic and profound impact on what we here in Scotland are trying to do to tackle the climate crisis and deliver the green change that is so badly needed.

“This isn’t an accident. They know what they are doing and they know what the consequences will be. They cannot be trusted with our climate for a moment longer. If they continue with their disastrous climate wrecking agenda then it will fuel an environmental and humanitarian crisis. They will have blood on their hands.”
