The Chancellor has lost all credibility and must resign

The Chancellor must reverse his damaging corporation tax cut and resign, according to the Scottish Greens economic spokesperson Maggie Chapman, who has condemned Downing Street’s “fantasy economics” and “warped priorities.”

Maggie Chapman MSP said:

“It has only been 3 weeks, and the Chancellor's mini-budget has fallen apart. This isn't just a problem for the Tory Party, it's a problem for all of us. With prices soaring and the prospect of even more cuts on the horizon, it cannot be the most vulnerable who are made to pay for Downing Street's mess.

“The corporation tax cut was a multibillion pound giveaway to some of the wealthiest companies in the world. The fact that it was even suggested is a sign of how warped and wrong this government's priorities are. The decision must be reversed, with an assurance that benefits will not be cut.

“It is clear that Kwasi Kwarteng cannot continue as Chancellor. He has lost all credibility and so has his fantasy economics agenda. The only person more implicated in the current chaos is the Prime Minister, who is ultimately responsible.

“But the problem goes far beyond the cruelty and incompetence of this current government. It is the brutal ideology and politics that they represent, and the vision that they stand for.

“Scotland did not vote for any of this. But the solution is not Rishi Sunak. Simply replacing one brand of Tory with another is not good enough.

“We need the real, structural and fundamental change that can only come with independence. With the powers of an independent country, we can create a welcoming Scotland that is fairer, greener and more equal. A Scotland for everyone, not just the super-rich.”
