The Scottish Greens have today (17 December) welcomed the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) vote for industrial action which had overwhelming support amongst secondary teachers.Isla OReilly_small

Isla O'Reilly, MSP candidate for Highlands & Islands and Scottish Green Party spokesperson on Education and Young people, called for immediate action to curb excessive workload demands created by the new qualifications system.

Isla O'Reilly said:

"The result of this ballot is a clear signal of the huge burden the new qualifications systems are placing on Scotland's secondary teachers. They have done a fantastic job of ensuring students successfully navigate through the new system for the first time.

"It has now become obvious that the current workload being placed on teachers and students is unsustainable. Placing such high assessment demands on our secondary children is counterproductive and only leads to stress and strain being felt by students and teachers alike.

"I urge the Scottish Government to prioritise funding and resources for this vital area to relieve the workload pressures our teachers are facing."
