Taylor Review of Modern Work shows successive UK Governments have ignored need to create quality employment
The Scottish Greens say today's (11 July) Taylor Review of Modern Working Practices shows how successive UK Governments have ignored the need to create quality employment.
Green MSP Andy Wightman, a member of Holyrood's Economy Committee, said:
"Given the Tories' mantra of cutting regulation and their anti-trades union attitude, it's hard to see how any meaningful improvements will come about for the increasing numbers of people faced with insecure employment. The bigger picture of course is the number of jobs that will be lost and wages that will be cut as a result of Brexit, brought about by the Tories' internal squabbling.
"The Taylor Review rightly points out that the National Living Wage is a powerful tool, and this underlines the unfair approach of the Tories who refuse to make it a real living wage and refuse to pay it to all workers. Greens have proposed a real living wage of £10 an hour, and not just for over-25s.
"The issues raised by the Taylor Review also pose questions for the Scottish Government, who need to toughen up their Fair Work agenda. It's not good enough to merely encourage businesses to employ people fairly; those businesses who do not comply must not receive financial support from the government or its agencies."
