Statement | Joe Biden

Patrick Harvie comments on Joe Biden's campaign resignation.

Responding to news that US President Joe Biden will not be contesting the next US election, Scottish Green co-leader, Patrick Harvie MSP, said:

Joe Biden has made the right decision, and it is welcome that he has done so.

His record as President has been very mixed. He has taken some positive steps and undone some of the damage of the Trump administration.

But reflections on Biden's time in office must confront his ongoing complicity in Israel's genocidal assault on Gaza.

He has continued to arm and support Israel while tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, creating one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes in the world.

His successor must urgently end the US role in the war and do everything they can to bring it to a halt.

It would be terrible for our world and our climate if Donald Trump is the next President of the United States. The racist far-right politics that he represents would once again inflict pain and chaos on the lives of vulnerable people and fuel the most bigoted and reactionary forces in the US and beyond.

The best way that the Democrats can stop Donald Trump is by moving away from a broken status quo and offering a bold and positive alternative that offers genuine and transformative change.”
