Standing together in community is how we defeat the far-right

The politics of division and hate will never win.

Speaking ahead of a demonstration in Glasgow city centre today organised by Stand Up to Racism, supported by a variety of charity organisations and trade unions, Scottish Greens MSP Iris Duane says standing together in community is how we defeat the far-right.

Iris said: “The scenes in Glasgow this week are not reflective of our great city, and we cannot allow our city to be painted as this. Glasgow has a long history as a welcoming, friendly city to people from every background. We show solidarity with communities more often than we see groups try to tear them down, and we will never let division or hate break our spirit.

“Today, we are gathering at the same place that a small minority of racists chose to desecrate our city. We are here to remind our friends, neighbours and colleagues that they deserve to feel safe and that there are many more people on their side than not.

“We will not allow the actions and encouragement of bad actor politicians and far-right figureheads to make us hate one another. We will stand together and reject their attempts, showing that Glasgow is a community who cares and won’t bow to the agenda of division and tribalism.”
