[SGP News] Lack Of Clarity On Energy-From-Waste Plants In Minister's Plan
From: greencomms@scottish.parliament.uk Media Release Green MSPs 13 September 2012 Re today’s announcement by Energy Minister Fergus Ewing on support levels for renewables. Patrick Harvie, Green MSP for Glasgow, said: "While the intention to encourage offshore wind and maintain support for most other renewables is sensible, it's worrying the minister is less clear on issues like demand reduction and energy-from-waste plants. Reform of our energy system presents a golden opportunity to prioritise sustainable sources that will serve future generations well, and there’s a danger we are not making the most of that opportunity. “It would be odd for us not to discourage energy-from-waste plants, such as the one proposed for Polmadie in Glasgow, which create demand for waste materials that should either be recycled or prevented from arising in the first place. SNP ministers like to give the impression they're switched on to green power but in reality they are happy to extend the life of our nuclear plants and have resisted our call to set a clear target for decarbonising our supplies."
