Scottish Greens hail new funding for world leading tidal energy site in Orkney

The future of energy in Scotland is renewable and our seas hold the key to its expansion.

Scottish Green MSP Ariane Burgess has hailed the ‘game changing’ announcement of new funding for the new 4MW tidal energy farm that will be installed offshore in Orkney and will host the largest number of tidal turbines anywhere in the world.

Nova Innovation, who are overseeing the project, has secured €20 million in EU Funding for the 16-turbine SEASTAR development.

Ariane Burgess, Scottish Greens MSP for the Highlands & Islands said: “Expanding tidal energy production could be a game changer for Scotland’s already substantial renewable energy potential.

“More importantly, it can be a source of good, green jobs for the many skilled workers currently dependent on the volatile oil and gas industry.

“The future of energy in Scotland is renewable and our seas hold the key to its expansion. Developing this project will be an international effort but it also offers an opportunity to build supply chain businesses in Orkney and across the Highlands & Islands.”
