Scottish Government cannot rely on UK testing system say Greens

Responding to reports of capacity issues and delays with the UK Government’s Lighthouse testing facility in Glasgow, Scottish Greens Health Spokesperson Alison Johnstone MSP said:

“It’s been clear for some time that the UK Government’s privatised testing system is not fit for purpose. Now, once again, this shambles has left us with no idea about how many new cases there are in Scotland.

“The Scottish Government has been telling us for weeks that it plans to move testing for care home workers out of the lighthouse labs and into NHS Scotland facilities, but on Friday the First Minister admitted that it would take until December for this to happen.

“It’s clear that the UK testing system cannot be relied upon, so I once again urge the Scottish Government to urgently increase its own capacity, using the great expertise available in Scotland’s NHS and university labs.”
