Rosebank decision a crucial ruling for people and planet

The Court of Session’s ruling against the controversial Rosebank oil site off the coast of Shetland has been hailed by the Scottish Greens’ climate spokesperson, Mark Ruskell, who called it “a crucial ruling for people and planet.”
Rosebank is the biggest undeveloped oil and gas field in the North Sea, with claims that around 500 million barrels could be extracted from the site.
Mr Ruskell said:
“This is a crucial ruling for people and planet, and must be a turning point in ending our reliance on fossil fuels.
“For far too long, oil and gas companies have been given free-reign to drill and destroy our seas without any care for the consequences.
“It is a completely reckless approach that is incompatible with our climate obligations and is doing nothing to lower the punishing bills that are inflicting so much misery on households and families across the country.
“There is no safe level of new drilling. Labour must turn its attention to the dozens of exploration licences that their Tory predecessors issued and review them all in light of this decision.”
Mr Ruskell added:
“I commend the work of the campaign groups who brought this case. We need an irreversible and fundamental shift in our climate and energy policy if we are to protect our planet for future generations.
“Renewable energy is the safest, cheapest and greenest energy available and is where our future must lie. Scotland already has the skills and resources to be a climate leader. All that is missing is the political will to do it.”
