Palestine Action ruling: a devastating blow to free speech

The Scottish Greens justice spokesperson Maggie Chapman has condemned the Court of Appeal ruling against Palestine Action.
Maggie said:
“This ruling is a devastating blow to free speech and the right to protest. The UK government and the courts have criminalised conscience and sent a chilling message to anyone willing to speak out against injustice.
“Since this absurd ban was imposed, thousands of people have been arrested for protesting against genocide, holding banners or simply offering solidarity. Many now face life-altering consequences for exercising fundamental democratic rights.
“To put peaceful protesters in the same category as ISIS or Al Qaeda is reckless, authoritarian, and a staggering waste of public resources.
“Protest is not terrorism. Direct action is not terrorism. This ruling sets a dangerous precedent that should alarm anyone who values free speech and civil liberties.
“The UK government has chosen to arm and support Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza while criminalising those who have stood against them.
“This will not stop people from opposing Israel’s war crimes or standing with the people of Palestine. Opposing genocide and apartheid isn’t terrorism - it is humanity.”
