Nicola Sturgeon urged to intervene over airport use by US Military

Nicola Sturgeon has been urged to intervene over concerns US officials have blocked Police Scotland investigations into the use of Scottish Airports by the US Military.

Since 2013, Police Scotland have been investigating the use of Scottish Airports during America’s so-called ‘War on Terror’ but have failed to obtain details of a unredacted US Senate report.

In a letter to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Green, Labour, SNP and Liberal Democrat MSPs highlighted investigations by the Rendition Project, which suggests at least 16 people were rendered to torture and arbitrary detention via Scottish airports during the period, and have called for the First Minister to intervene.

Commenting, Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie said: “I remember calling for this probe into this use of Scottish airports 15 years ago, and Police Scotland have been investigating since 2013. It is disgraceful that officers are still waiting for evidence, and deeply concerning that responsibility for transparency now rests with the Trump administration.

“Without a concerted effort now by the Scottish and UK Governments, we might never get the truth. As the UK Government sidles up to Trump in the hope of a post-Brexit trade deal, it’s vital the First Minister pushes them on rendition.”
