NHS must be protected from Brexit shambles say Greens

Scotland’s NHS must not become a casualty of the UK Government’s shambolic Brexit project, Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie MSP has said.

Responding to reports of predicted disruption when the Brexit transition period ends on 31st December, Mr Harvie has slammed the Tory government for pursuing such a dangerous policy in the middle of a global pandemic and called on the Prime Minister to fix this mess now.

Patrick Harvie MSP said:

“The Westminster government’s chaotic approach to exiting the EU will have dire consequences for the people of Scotland, who let’s not forget have repeatedly rejected the Brexit project.

“Dragging Scotland out of the EU against our will was always appalling, but for the Prime Minister to do so on a cliff edge in the middle of a pandemic is criminal.

“NHS Tayside has said that the UK Government failing to reach an agreement with the EU could, “lead to an inability to deliver safe and effective care”, and we know similar concerns are shared across the country.

“With just 24 days left until the scheduled end of the transition period our NHS has been put in an awful position and it is incumbent on Boris Johnson and his Brexit cheerleaders to fix this and fix it now. Otherwise lives will be put at risk.

“It is vital that the Prime Minister explains today exactly what measures he will take to protect the NHS from this catastrophic double whammy of Brexit and Covid. It’s unacceptable that the Brexit cabal seek to put ideology ahead of lives.

“It’s clearer than ever the only thing the UK Government has to offer Scotland is contempt.”
