MSPs urged to oppose ‘dangerous’ Nordic model for sex work

All MSPs who care about supporting women should reject Ash Regan’s dangerous bill that would introduce a ‘Nordic model’ for sex work by criminalising clients paying for sex in Scotland.
Scottish Green MSP Maggie Chapman will be speaking at a rally outside the Scottish Parliament this evening organised by Scotland for Decrim, which calls for sex workers to be able to work without threat of criminal sanction.
Maggie said:
“What Ash Regan is proposing is dangerous and would put sex workers at greater risk of violence and poverty.
"That is why the model she is advocating for is opposed by sex worker rights groups, human rights organisations and the World Health Organisation.
“The evidence from around the world is clear. It would create more insecurity and exploitation by driving the industry even further underground, and will do nothing to half trafficking or coercion.
“Our approach must be aimed at minimising the harm, marginalisation and exploitation that sex workers face every day. This deeply flawed bill would not only fail to do that, it would, in fact, do the exact opposite.
“I am proud to be joining the Scotland For Decrim rally and I hope MSPs from all parties will do the same.
“Their voices and experiences need to be at the centre of the debate rather than being ignored by so many of the reactionary and ultra-conservative groups who are backing this bill."
