Major step forward on banning conversion therapy

"Banning these disgusting and violent practices is long overdue," - says Maggie Chapman MSP.

Scottish Greens have welcomed calls by MSPs from all parties that moves to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’ in Scotland should be “swift”.

A report by Holyrood’s Equalities, Human Rights and Civil Justice Committee has said the ban, guaranteed by the cooperation deal that brought Scottish Greens into government, should be “swift and comprehensive”.

Commenting, Scottish Greens spokesperson for Equalities and Human Rights, Maggie Chapman said: “Banning these disgusting and violent practices is long overdue, so I am delighted that all MSPs on the Committee have called for swift action.

“I’m grateful for the urgency shown by committee members, and this progress is thanks to the tireless work of campaigners and survivors. Hate crimes against our LGBTQI+ communities in Scotland are on the rise and we must ensure that these cannot be backed up with institutional harm. I’m confident that Scotland can now proceed to act on this key Scottish Greens commitment.”
