Labour urged to reject new Cambo oil field application

The UK government has been urged to reject Ithaca’s new application to drill in the controversial Cambo oil field.
The fossil fuel giant’s own analysis reportedly shows that the development would produce 100 million tonnes of carbon emissions over 25 years.
Development of Cambo was halted in 2021 after Shell withdrew from the project, but this new submission will lead to a public consultation.
The Scottish Greens climate spokesperson, Patrick Harvie, said:
“With fossil fuel prices skyrocketing, this is the time to be moving away from oil and gas, not doubling down on it and drilling even more of our North Sea.
“Many of us hoped that we had seen the back of Cambo. If it is given the go ahead it would be a huge backward step for our climate, while doing nothing for the hundreds of thousands of households all over Scotland who are being hit with escalating bills.
“The best way that we can lower those bills is by investing in the clean, green renewable energy that Scotland has in abundance.
“With the right support for renewables from both our governments and from industry we can lower bills, cut carbon emissions and create thousands of good well paid jobs that will last for years to come.
“If the UK government is remotely serious about our environment it will do what it did with Rosebank and reject this destructive application for good.”
